Severe Cold Snap Damages Pipes Around Deer Creek
The mid-February cold snap brought single-digit temperatures and frigid weather to Denver and Deer Creek inhabitants and caused many pipes to burst. A new record low of minus fourteen degrees Fahrenheit happened on February 14, beating the 1903 record of minus ten degrees.
SERVPRO® of Lakewood-Ken Caryl has been responding to water damage emergencies for over forty years and has witnessed many cold snaps that have caused frozen and burst pipes. On the American Red Cross website, they offer tips on how to thaw frozen pipes. They say that if you can locate the frozen area of the pipe, turn on the water faucet and apply heat to the section of pipe that is frozen by using one of these methods below and continue to apply heat until the full water pressure is restored:
- An electric heating pad around the pipe
- An electric hairdryer
- A portable space heater
- By wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water
